I love sandwiches in any form. Be it a proper cheese and ham sandwich, a burger, a falafel, an egg benedict or just some filled pita bread. Today however I felt like giving a Döner a try, homemade. Of course I had to cheat a little bit, as I don’t have a spit roasting thing, but I came quite close to what I wanted to get to.

Technically I am not doing a proper Döner Kebab at all here. But the original dish gave me the inspiration for this kind of sammich.

I don’t have a proper roasting machine to roast some lamb or chicken meat like the Döner places do. So my first cheat was to replace the Döner meat with Sucuk, a turkish kind of sausage. What it lacks in pork it makes up in garlic, which makes it a great sausage. It tastes great raw already, but I like to roast for a bit to get it more intense.

Next up is the garlic sauce. As I do not like any of the commercial sauces you can buy ready made I just made some Tsatsiki with tons of garlic. The hot sauce was made from tomato sauce leftovers with heaps of chili sauce, but you could make a proper one by either mixing ayvar (paprika paste) with chili or cooking one from scratch, using roasted paprika, tomatoes, fresh chili, some herbs like oregano and a bit of garlic.

Lastly I chose rocket as a salad as I prefer it over the iceberg salad you get at most Döner places.

Time to put it all together!
